Brunel Building Industrial Style Reception Area with reclaimed industrial lighting by Loomlight

The Brunel Building is a commercial workplace development built in 2019 which became the National Winner in the BCO Commercial Workplace Award in 2020.

We are proud to have supplied the reclaimed lighting for this award winning project, working with EQ2 Light the lighting designers, to realise their lighting design. Featured throughout the industrial style communal areas of the Brunel Building are 5ft aluminium twin strip lights by Calstar, aluminium engine room cage pendants and aluminium dome ceiling lights. All the light fixtures were reclaimed, restored and rewired by hand with modern electrics in Loomlight's workshop.

The building is set alongside the Grand Union Canal and opposite Paddington Station. The architects, Derwent London, drew inspiration from the location and implemented a robust construction which reflected the spirit of the great engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

There is an industrial aesthetic running throughout the entire building from the external steel exoskeleton which deals successfully with the foundation issues imposed from the underground tube lines and the canal alongside - as well as the industrial style interior which uses a a limited pallet of high-quality materials. The interior design effortlessly exudes the meticulous attention to detail which was no doubt required to complete the project to such a high standard.

Sustainability is at the core of the Brunel Building. A variety of ground-breaking solutions have been implemented including an aquifer thermal storage system, strategic thermal mass placement, and the use of recycled/reused materials. The vintage industrial light fittings playing a part in that, being salvaged from decommissioned ships, then being restored and rewired to exceed British Standards ready for this modern commercial interior space. All this contributes to the project’s admirably low carbon footprint.
